“No Salt Chef” Chef Brian Mc Dermott is no stranger to A Taste of Donegal, he is a popular firm fixture at the festival and MC for event.
Brian McDermott is an award-winning chef who has recently become chef-proprietor of the newly-restored Foyle Hotel in Moville. Originally from Burt, he published his second cookery book, Brian McDermott’s Donegal Table, to critical and popular acclaim earlier this year. He is a firm favourite on the Irish food festival circuit, and is highly sought after as a demo chef and MC at festivals from A Taste of Donegal to the National Ploughing Championships. He is a regular on TV and radio throughout Ireland, including the Today Show on RTÉ 1 and BBC Radio Foyle’s Mark Patterson Show. In 2018 he was named Ulster’s Local Food Hero at the prestigious Irish Restaurant Awards.
He has built a national reputation as a chef on one simple belief – that tasty, healthy food based around traditional recipes and local produce is something every family can make and enjoy. As one of twelve children growing up in Burt in County Donegal, the focal point of the family was always his mother’s kitchen table, and that childhood memory of the family coming together and connecting over her home cooking continues to inspire Brian as he shares his own love of food with others.
Brian holds a Culinary Arts Degree, and is currently general manager of the North West Regional College’s Food Innovation Food Development Centre – the only one of its kind in the north and west of Ireland – and is a food consultant to some of the biggest names in Irish food. He is also a food advisor to the Donegal GAA and gives cookery classes and provides nutritional advice to the Senior Football team.
He is the author of two cookery books ‘Reunite with Food’, and ‘Donegal Table’.
Brian lives in Moville, Co. Donegal with his wife Brenda and daughters Niamh and Aoife.
